India is one of the ancient and oldest civilization in the world, known for it's various cultures, religion, festival's and Communities. One of the well known Community,we will talk about is Sindhi Community and their rich cultural history and their festival of Cheti-Chand.

Cheti-Chand is one of the most important  major festival of Sindhi  Community, Which is Celebrated World wide by all the Sindhi diaspora, with great Joy and Enthusiasm.

Cheti-Chand festival is regarded as Sindhi "New-Year",Sindhi's follows the "Vikram Sambat" Calander which is linked with the Hindu King Vikramaditya.

Cheti-Chand is celebrated on the first day of  Chaitra  month, known as CHET in Sindhi, hence it is known as Cheti-Chand.

It is one of the most auspicious day as Sindhi Community celebrate the festival of Cheti-Chand to perpetuate the birth anniversary of Ishta Dev Uderolal, reincarnation of "Varun Devta",which is popularly known as LORD JHULELAL,the  patron  Saint of  Sindhi's.

Let's talk about the LEGEND behind the Cheti-Chand.

The first and oldest civilization is Indus valley, and it was the same Era when LORD JHULELAL was born on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra in Sindh. Although the  exact  time  and  the year of LORD  JHULELAL'S incarnation is not known, his birth year is estimated some time in the middle of the 10th Century. This was the period when Sindh came under the rule of Sumras

According to Legend, in the second half of  tenth 10th Century  CE, the  province  of THATTA,in Sindh came under the Rule of the Makrab Khan he acquired the Kingdom by killing Shah Sadakat Khan and crowned himself as "Mrikh Shah". As soon as he was crowned his Maulvis (Courtier's) advised him to spread Islam in order to acquire Janat (Heaven) upon their advice,he called the Mukhi ( Hindu-Leader) to embrace Islam or prepare to die.The Mukhi (Hindu-Leader) was terrified and begged for sometime to consider the Shahi  Farman  (Royal edict) While trying  to  find  a  solution  to  the problem, with the Hindu Sindhi people. It was discussed  about  the  promise  of "LORD KRISHNA in Bhagvad Gita", whenever the Sin's increases beyond the limit  and  the religion,  seems  to be endangered,I will come in the form of an Avatar (Incarnate) and mitigate the distress of my worshippers .To Save themselves from wicked Mrikh Shah, the Sindhi Hindu's turned to God "Varun" the God  of  the River.Thousand's gathered on the bank of river Sindhu and prayed Jal Devta Dariya Shah (Water God) for safe guarding them from the cruel and undesirable action's of Mrikh Shah.

During the prayer time, people wear the same clothes, without shaving, without any footwear, also took the bath without oil and soap and took fasting, simple food was served onetime, people slept at the bank's of Sindhu River, praying and Singing lullaby for God also known as (Lal ja Panjras) in Sindhi. At the end of the 40th day ,they heard a divine voice (Akashwani) from heaven. The Heavenly voice told them that 8 month's from now,I shall take birth in the house of Ratanchand Lohana and from the womb of Mata Devki in Nasarpur and will rescue you all.On Cheti-Chand day Mata Devki gave birth to a baby boy.The child was named "Udaychand" means (Rising Moon). Immediately upon the birth of the child the parents saw in his mouth Sindhu River flowing and an old man riding on a Palla Fish upstream in a northerly direction.

He was also called "Uderolal",it is said that when "Uderolal" was a child, his cradle (Swing) rocked itself to Lull him to sleep earning him the name JHULELAL- the LORD of Swing.

The news of the miraculous JHULELAL soon reached Mrikh Shah, who decided to arrest him, water started flowing in the Court, all those present found themselves inundated in Water. Simultaneously fire also broke out and the palace became a towering inferno no way to escape, however he was unsuccessful in his attempt.Soon Mrikh Shah realised his mistake and he pleaded to JHULELAL,please save my Courtier's and me,and agreed to treat Hindu's and Muslim's equally.Hence all the Sindhi Hindu's were saved from the wicked Mrikh Shah.

LORD JHULELAL preached a message of peace. He is believed to have said,"He whom you call Allah and my people call KRISHNA,are but one and same.

The God of the Sindhu worshipped as Lord JHULELAL and Uderolal,by the Hindu's is also revered as Zinda Pir,by the local Muslim's.

LORD JHULELAL continues to be the unifying force this is not difficult to fathom, after all how can a river God be anything but universal, especially one that personifies the great Indus or Sindhu, from whom a community-Sindhi,a province "Sindh",a religion "Hindu"and a country-India all get their name!

Hence,LORD JHULELAL is known as God of Indus, Sindhi's all over the world greet each other with by saying "Jeko Chavando JHULELAL tehinja theenda Beda Paar".

The Celebration of Cheti-Chand starts from the early morning, people get dressed in new clothes, start their day  by  visiting  near  by  temples  offering their  prayers  to LORD JHULELAL and getting the blessings of the elder's of the Family.

Another major tradition observed on this day is the procession taken out in public is called Baharana Sahib.

BAHARANA SAHIB

Baharana Sahib  is  a  nicely  decorated bronze thaal in which Jyot (oil lamp) idol of Lord JHULELAL is placed and a Kunri (an earthen vessel) full of water covered with red cloth is kept.Wheat flour is kneaded and given a shape of cone, and is decorated with vermillion, Cardamom, Almonds, Cashews and Cloves. On top of it large piece of refined Sugar (Misri jo Sangh) is placed, this Cone is surrounded  with  fresh  flower's, fruits "Aakho"(fine quality of rice and sugar) and Coconut  is  kept  as  the  offering  to  the LORD JHULELAL.

During the procession of Baharana Sahib traditional Sindhi folk dance "CHHEJ" is performed by the Sindhi people of all age group. Then Bharana Sahib is taken to near by River, upon reaching the River Bank the contents of this Thaal are immersed in the Water, which is considered as our humble offering to Lord JHULELAL.After the offering of "Aakho"(fine quality of rice and sugar) Prasad of black Chana and sweet rice Sesa (Tayhiri) is distributed to all the people.

This practice of distributing of Sesa (Tayhiri) and black Chana (boiled beans) has been originated from an instance in Lord JHULELAL'S life.

Udays  (Lord JHULELAL)  step  mother wanted him to earn, some money for the Family. She gave him the Container full of Chana ( boiled beans) to sell in the near by market.Lord JHULELAL went to the bank of Sindhu, he  use to distribute the half of the contents amongst the beggar's, poor and the pious one's,who lived on the river bank's. The other half he made and offering to River Sindhu it was his daily practice, during the afternoon LORD JHULELAL used to talk to children and elderly person, about the spiritual wealth on the river bank.In the evening the same container, offered to River Sindhu, emerged from the water's and came to LORD JHULELAL with full of fine quality rice, with which LORD JHULELAL used to return home and give it to her step mother.

As LORD JHULELAL, continues to be the unifying force and guiding light in our life, let us all come together and celebrate the auspicious day of Cheti-Chand on 13th April,I wish you all Happy Cheti-Chand and a Happy New Year.

" Cheti-Chand jyon lakh lakh wadhayun"

"Jeko Chawundo JHULELAL tehinja theenda Beda Paar"
