Akshaya Tritiya - The Joy of Giving

 


Akshaya Tritiya is highly auspicious and holy day in the Hindu communities. Akshaya Tritiya is also known as "Akha Teej". It is observed on Shukla Paksha Tritiya the third day during the bright half of Vaishakha lunar month of the Hindu calendar.

Akshaya Tritiya is a Sanskrit word, where "Akshaya" means "Eternal" never diminishing and "Tritiya" stands for 'third'. Hence the benifits of doing Japa (chanting) Yagna, Dan Punya ( Charity work) Pitra tarpan and puja on this day never diminishes and remain with person for ever.The knowledge gained or Charity done on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to give maximum benefits. Also the day is supposed to bring good luck and success and is considered auspicious for starting new ventures.

History and Vedic Significance 

According to ancient history and Vedic astrology, this day marks a lot of important incidents.

Akshaya Tritiya  has  great  Vedic significance it is believed on this day Satya Yuga ended and Treta Yuga began.

Maharishi Vyas started narrating the great Epic Mahabharata with Lord Ganesha as a wordsmith.

This day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parshurama the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

On this day, King Bhagirath brought River Maa Ganga on this Earth from Heaven.

According to the  great Epic Mahabharata, on this day Lord Krishna presented the "Akshaya Patra" to the Pandavas while on their exile. He blessed them with this Bowl that would continue to produce unlimited amount of food that would never leave them hungry.

It is believed on this day Lord Kubera the God of wealth had, worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and with her grace he was assigned the job of being the treasure of God's.

On this day, Sudama, Lord Krishna's childhood friend had been to Dwarka to meet Lord Krishna. As he did not wish to see his friend empty handed to whom he was meeting after long time, he took some rice grains. When Lord Krishna accepted the grains he immediately understood about Sudhama's poverty. Lord Krishna was so over whelmed with his friends magnanimity he converted the small hut of Sudama into a palace. From that day onwards people started doing charity and good deeds on this day.

The famous Rath Yatra of Jagannath Puri temple starts on this day.

This day is also celebrated, in the fond memory of Rishabhdev the first tirthankar Bhagwan Adinath. Jain's fast on this day they break their fast by having sugarcane juice.  

 The day of Akshaya Tritiya is also given special significance in Vedic astrology.

Vedic astrologers also consider Akshaya Tritiya an auspicious day free from all malefic effects. As per Hindu electional astrology three lunar days Yugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Vijaya Dashami don't need any muhurat to start or perform any auspicious work as these three days are free from all malefic effects.

Akshaya Tritiya is said to be the most auspicious day of the year, any charity or good act performed or gold purchased or puja conducted on this day never diminishes and continue to grow or appreciate. Also Puja performed on this day gains the maximum benefits, however buying of gold or any valuable items is certainly not listed in Vedic script.

The true benefits of the day have more spiritual than wordly significance. Akshaya Tritiya is an occasion for us to learn the universal truth. Any meaningful activity or charity done on this day is supposed to be fruitful. In this aspect, we have that for true success in life, we should give with pure heart. Helping the poor and needy with a clean heart is the key to receiving material and spiritual blessings. Giving money or material on Akshaya Tritiya with an understanding of this fact will produce great returns.

As we celebrate the auspicious occasion of "Akshaya Tritiya"  On the 14 th of May going through the tough time of pandemic, let all of us take this opportunity to reach out to the needy and below par people and help them out in the best possible way and celebrate the joy of sharing together with everyone.
